Compassion in Action

Gifts for the Sole

A good pair of shoes is a tremendous blessing for a homeless person.  Often, the homeless walk the streets all day, then wear their shoes all night so no one can steal them.  Unfortunately, most homeless people can’t afford to buy a pair of sturdy shoes.

But those who come to the Mission for help will be given a brand new pair, thanks to a very generous donation by Comfort Plus Shoes.  This spring, the company donated 700 pairs of shoes, valued at over $15,000, to the Mission.

"When you are down on your luck, the last thing you need to worry about is your shoes," says Luis Altoro, Vice President and Partner at Comfort Plus Shoes. "Having a good pair of shoes when you need them is important."

Luis is a longtime friend of the homeless and poor. "Part of being an American is being empathetic, and you need to have compassion for your fellow man," he says. "City Union Mission is a valuable asset."
