Funds Raised Support City Union Mission’s Outreach to Kansas City’s Poor and Homeless

Hundreds of motorcycle enthusiasts from across the Kansas City metropolitan area will share the roar of the ride during City Union Mission’s 23rd annual Bikers with a Mission Run for the Homeless Benefit Ride on Sunday, May 6.  The 100-mile benefit ride raises funds in support of City Union Mission’s programs and services to assist our city’s hungry, homeless and near-homeless families and individuals.  To date, the annual event has raised over $560,000.

“Not only is this a popular event for many single riders and clubs, but it is also vital to the Mission because of what it allows us to provide for our homeless residents and guests,” said City Union Mission Executive Director, Dan Doty.  The funds are used to help the Mission’s clients with needs over and above those the organization typically budgets for, such as utility assistance, bus tokens, medications, baby formula and eyeglasses.

Doty explained while these may seem like small things, they can make a big difference in the lives of people who are homeless, struggling to get by from day to day or working to rebuild their lives.  “For example, bus tokens allow men and women in our shelters to get to job interviews,” he said.  “And help with utilities for even one month may keep a family from going hungry or missing a rent payment.”

Again this year, a premium prize will be awarded to the participant that collects the most pledges with cash in hand at the beginning of the run. A custom-made knife—created by Bill Miller of W.M. Knives—will be one of the prizes awarded.

Participants can pre-register online at www.bikerswithamission.org or go here.  This is where you can also sponsor a rider if you are not participating in the ride.  Registration will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. the day of the event at City Union Mission, 1108 E. 10th Street (corner of 10th and Troost).  Bikers are invited to return to that location at the conclusion of the ride for Christian entertainment, food and door prizes.

“Even if you don’t ride a motorcycle yourself, you’re still invited to take part in all the fun and make a difference in the life of Kansas City’s needy citizens,” Doty explained.  “You can sponsor your favorite rider by visiting the Mission’s web site or come to the parking lot of our Men’s Shelter on the day of the event and enjoy the festival-like atmosphere.”
