News Release: City Union Mission Receives Grant for Family Center Renovations
Mission News
City Union Mission was selected to receive $457,000 for improvements to its Family Center. The funding is part of $740,000 in housing grants being awarded in the Kansas City area by the Federal Home Loan Bank (FLHB) of Des Moines Affordable Housing Program to rehabilitate existing properties and homes, creating safe and decent housing.
The Mission is sponsored in the Family Center project by CommunityAmerica Credit Union, which is responsible for ensuring the Mission operates the facility as an affordable housing unit for the homeless and poor throughout the duration of the grant.
The grant presentation was Friday, January 13, at City Union Mission’s Family Center, 1310 Wabash Avenue in Kansas City.
Curt Heidt represented FHLB at the event, and Tim Saracini from CommunityAmerica also attended. Neighborhood Housing Services of Kansas City Acquisition Rehab Donated Properties and sponsors U.S. Bank, NA, ND and Neighborhood Housing Services of Kansas City, Inc. were on hand to receive the balance of the grant funding. Congressman Emanuel Clever, II was also in attendance.
According to City Union Mission Executive Director Daniel J. Doty, the Family Center project is necessary to maintain 48 units of housing for homeless mothers and fathers with children and intact families. The current buildings are in need of maintenance work, including re-roofing, window repairs and replacements, and restoring exterior walls.
“As we continue to see more families experiencing homelessness for the very first time, these renovations are vital to ensure we can provide safe and comfortable housing for struggling parents working to establish stable lives for themselves and their children. We’re grateful to Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines and our partner in this project, CommunityAmerica Credit Union, for recognizing the vital role our Family Center plays in our Kansas City community and awarding us the funds to make the necessary repairs,” Doty said.
