2006 School Supply Drive Volunteer Opportunities
July 06, 2006

Partner with us to make an impact on the lives of hundreds of low income and homeless children between July 25th and September 1st. Last year 1,586 backpacks filled with school supplies were given to families on Distribution Day.

Groups are also encouraged to Adopt-a-Day at our Family Center to fill many positions. Would your group give this consideration?

Interviewer/Office Assistant
Three to seven adults (18+ years old) per day will have the opportunity to share the Gospel of Christ with families, while assisting with each step of the application process. A half-hour of training is provided. For groups adopting a day, we can come to your site to provide training before July 25th with one weeks advance notice. Interviewer/Office Assistant positions are available:

  • July 25 - 28, 12:00pm - 4:30pm
  • July 31 - August 10, 9:30am - 4:30pm
  • August 14 - 21, 9:30am - 4:30pm
  • August 23 - September 1, 9:30am - 4:30pm

Childcare Provider
One adult (18+ years old) per day will supervise childcare to enable parents to complete an interview and hear the Gospel without distraction. Pre-school to middle-school aged children are supervised in a classroom. Providers are assisted by Childcare Assistants. The Mission has supplies for entertaining children, but Providers are welcome to bring approved videos, sit-down games, art projects, and Bible stories.

Adults older than sixteen will need to complete a background check. This takes 3-5 business days and should be submitted no later than one week prior to one’s scheduled time. The Background Authorization form can be downloaded here. Please complete this form and e-mail to volunteers@cumission.org or fax to 816-471-3811. Because of the background check requirement, while volunteers can choose to serve on only one day, we really do prefer providers that can commit to at least two days. These days do not have to be consecutive. Please contact us if you have any questions about this. Childcare Provider positions are available:

  • July 25 - 28, 12:00pm - 4:30pm
  • July 31 - August 10, 9:30am - 4:30pm
  • August 14 - 21, 9:30am - 4:30pm
  • August 23 - September 1, 9:30am - 4:30pm

Childcare Assistant
Three to six responsible young adults (14+ years old) per day will assist Child Care Providers with the care and entertainment of children.

  • July 25 - 28, 12:00pm - 4:30pm
  • July 31 - August 10, 9:30am - 4:30pm
  • August 14 - 21, 9:30am - 4:30pm
  • August 23 - September 1, 9:30am - 4:30p

Care Handler
This is a great opportunity for men and men’s groups. It takes one to fifteen men (16+ years old) who are capable of carrying boxes up and down stairs. How long it takes on each of these days depends on how many men have volunteered. The Transportation Department intends to start at 8:30am, but the unexpected could change the start time. The longest it would last is to 3:00pm.

  • August 4, 8:30a.m.-3:00p.m- (Time subject to change): Volunteers will meet at the Lexington 2nd Chance Thrift Store to load a truck with school supplies and then proceed to unload it at the Family Center for sorting and distribution.
  • August 25, 8:30a.m.-3:00p.m- (Time subject to change): Volunteers will meet at the Family Center to load a truck with excess school supplies and unload it at the Lexington 2nd Chance Thrift Store for storage until next year.

Supply Packer
One to four adults (16+ years old) per day will fill backpacks with school supplies in the Family Center gym to meet grade level requirements and sizes.

  • August 7 - 10, 9:00am - 3:00pm

Supply Distributor
Individuals or groups of up to 20 per shift (16+ years old, 12+ years old if accompanied by an adult) will hand out filled backpacks to children in the Family Center Gym. Have the incredible joy of seeing smiling faces as the children receive their new school supplies. Check with the Volunteer Department at (816) 329-1487 or by email at volunteers@cumission.org for updates on available slots.

  • August 11, 12:00pm - 4:30pm
  • August 22, 8:30am - 12:45pm
  • August 22, 12:30pm - 5:00pm

Please prayerfully consider these opportunities to share Christ with families! Here are what some volunteers from last year had to say about supporting the School Supply Drive:

I had the privilege of serving in the School Supplies Ministry at City Union Mission last year and it was awesome!  I had the greatest blessing of all when I led a man to the LORD! And that's what it's all about! I went to GIVE, but I was the one who RECEIVED!

If you are a task oriented person or a people person, City Union Mission has a job for you. Filling bags with food, stuffing backpacks with supplies, sharing the gospel with clients, count items in the clothing room or entering data into the computer are just a few of the rewarding jobs you could do at City Union Mission.

Safety in the area? I have volunteered for several years, on a monthly basis, and my car has never even been scratched. Solely depending on the protection of God, I even allow my 11 year old daughter to carry bags to the clients' cars. We have been blessed in even this small act of kindness.

Take a step out of your comfort zone, God is there too.
