Six of Kansas City’s largest churches joined together recently to collect underwear for City Union Mission. Kansas City Baptist Temple, Pleasant Valley Baptist, First Baptist of Raytown, Colonial Presbyterian and United Methodist Church of the Resurrection collected underwear, socks and t-shirts for the poor and homeless throughout the month of June. Sheffield Family Life Center will be finishing up their drive in August.
The underwear drive was done cooperatively in an effort to make a bigger impact in giving as a group.
"We wanted to come together as a group and participate in a project together. We are hoping that by our example, other churches will join us in ‘making some good noise’ in this city when it comes to churches reaching out into our communities. We currently have plans for some other projects as well," said Kansas City Baptist Temple Missions Director, Cathy McGaughey.
Over 3,000 pairs of underwear have been donated by the churches. The underwear will be handed out at City Union Mission’s Family Shelter and Men’s Center. Children’s underwear will also be given out to low-income children who receive school supplies through City Union Mission. |
