“Don’t Be Afraid To Reconcile With Your Kids”
A Father’s Day Welton Knox Can Finally Look Forward To
June 06, 2005

Thirteen-year-old Dessaire Knox is ecstatic to have her daddy back in her life this Father’s Day.  Welton Knox, a recent graduate of one of City Union Mission’s long-term recovery programs, treasures his new relationship with his only child.

“For years, I was ashamed to go around her because of my addiction, and since I didn’t have money to buy her things.  Now, I talk to her every day.  She gives me purpose.  Wanting her to be happy with me motivated me to stay the course in the Christian Life Program,” said Welton.

He offers advice to parents who are not involved in their children’s lives.

“I missed so many years.  Don’t be afraid to reconcile with your kids.  One thing I’ve learned about kids…they are forgiving.  Hurry because they only have a few impressionable years,” said Welton.  “They don’t care about money, they just want a parent.”

Dessaire was thrilled to welcome her father back.

“Now, I can hug him and kiss him.  He calls every day to make sure I do my homework and make sure I read my Bible and do my devotions.  He always talks about God.  He tells me to respect people and not huff and puff at my mom when she tells me to do stuff.  I’m happy he’s realized he needs to take care of me,” said Dessaire.  “Now, he knows that he belongs to me!”

Having her father in her life has also helped Dessaire feel more self-assured.

“I’m more confident now.  I used to feel bad when my friends would go places with their dads,” said Dessaire.  “Now, I’m happy to say, ‘No, I can’t go to your house tonight because my dad is coming over.’”

Welton, who is now employed full-time, encourages Dessaire to pursue a career and stay focused.

“She wants to be a lawyer and I want her to reach that goal.  I don’t want her to fall into the same pitfalls I did. Most importantly, I want her to know God loves her,” said Welton.  “I want her to know it’s not enough to be good; we need to please God.”

For a Father’s Day present, Dessaire is contemplating a Father’s Day hat or balloon, but Welton will tell you, the best gift he will receive is her love.
