The School Supplies effort Of City Union Mission is underway and full speed ahead! Last year, God used His people in the School Supplies effort to see 21 adults receive Jesus Christ as their personal Savior! We'd love to have you partner with us in God's Kingdom work as we share the Good News of Jesus Christ with unbelievers, while meeting a need for some KC families.
If you hear God calling you to join this School Supplies effort, prayerfully consider the following service opportunities that are available:
- Interviewers: Three to seven adults (18+ years old) per day will have the opportunity to share the Gospel of Christ with families, while assisting with each step of the application process. A half-hour of training is provided.
- Childcare Providers: One adult (18+ years old) per day will supervise childcare to enable parents to complete an interview and hear the Gospel without distraction. Pre-school to middle-school aged children are supervised in a classroom. Providers are assisted by Childcare Assistants. The Mission has supplies for entertaining children, but Providers are welcome to bring approved videos, sit-down games, art projects, and Bible stories.
Adults older than sixteen will need to complete a background check. This takes 3-5 business days and should be submitted no later than one week prior to one’s scheduled time. The Background Authorization form can be downloaded here. Please complete this form and e-mail to volunteers@cumission.org or fax to 816-471-3811. Because of the background check requirement, while volunteers can choose to serve on only one day, we really do prefer providers that can commit to at least two days. These days do not have to be consecutive. Please contact us if you have any questions about this. Childcare Provider positions are available:
- Childcare Assistants: Three to six responsible young adults (14+ years old) per day will assist Child Care Providers with the care and entertainment of children.
- Pantry workers: Fill food orders from pantry and restock shelves.
- Client Guides: Assist with client flow, greeting and leading from one station to the next.
- Clothing Distribution: Assist parent in finding underwear, socks and uniforms for eligible children.
- School Supply Packers: Fill backpacks with school supplies.
- Care Handlers (for men): This is a great opportunity for men and men’s groups. It takes one to fifteen men (16+ years old) who are capable of carrying boxes up and down stairs. How long it takes on each of these days depends on how many men have volunteered. The Transportation Department intends to start at 8:30am, but the unexpected could change the start time. The longest it would last is to 3:00pm. loading/unloading truck with boxes of school supplies (for men).
The School Supplies effort runs from July 25 - August 31. Community Assistance Staff will provide training and directions on what your role entails. For further information or to volunteer, please contact either Pat Brodnax (816-329-1487, PatB@cumission.org) or Bret Kroh (816-329-1469, Bret@cumission.org).
