Dr. David Littlefield and his wife, Joanne, have a vision for the poor in Kansas City.
“We’re believers, and we think it’s important to not just say the right thing, but to do the right thing,” Dr. Littlefield said.

Twice each year, the Littlefields clear their schedule and open the doors of their Leawood optometry clinic for a full day to serve City Union Mission clients in need of eye care. The clinic can see up to 20 clients a day and provides thorough eye exams at no cost.
“We give them just as good an exam as we would give any patient,” Dr. Littlefield said. “It’s been a very positive experience.”
Joanne, who works part-time at the clinic, arranges the events with help from office assistant Feroza. In addition to eye care, they provide snacks for the City Union Mission patients to make the day enjoyable.
People who have poor eyesight can be at a significant disadvantage when trying to get a job or a driver’s license. Many of the Mission clients who receive care from Dr. Littlefield would not otherwise have the corrective eyewear they need. With discounted materials provided by Sutherlin Optical Lab, a local producer of eyeglass lenses, Dr. Littlefield not only provides exams, he also fills City Union Mission clients’ prescriptions and outfits them with brand-new eyeglass frames and lenses.
While Littlefield Optometry recently hosted its third day of donated service to City Union Mission since beginning a relationship with the Mission in December 2007, the Littlefields have years of experience using their talents to serve others. They are active members of Christ Community Church and have participated in local service events and international mission trips. Dr. Littlefield hopes more people will see and respond to the community’s needs.
“A lot of people are willing to contribute to needs halfway across the world, but we can do the same thing at home,” he said. “There’s every kind of need, and all businesses have a product or service that could benefit the Mission.”
