Annual Report

Our Vision

City Union Mission last undertook a capital campaign in 1997-98. That effort, which raised $4 million on a $3 million goal, provided a new long-term recovery shelter for Women and Families with 11 family suites. It renovated the existing emergency family shelter, adding 6 new family units, a kitchen and an expanded dining area to accommodate increased demand. It also made important updates to our aging Men’s Shelter and expanded our Transitional Living Apartments.

Our hope and prayer for our capital campaign is to provide for the immediate needs of our guests now ... and in the future.

Our Building Walls that Rebuild Lives campaign will:

  • Renovate the existing Men’s Shelter to more than double the capacity for Emergency Men’s Shelter services from 140 to 300 men.
The kitchen will be moved and expanded to accommodate greater demand and to free up the elevator bank to allow full access for men in wheelchairs. There will be a medical exam area, more day room space and showers to accommodate increased demand. Guests who do not need to enroll in the long-term program will, as needed, be able to access the learning center provided in the long-term men's shelter.

  • Construct a new 35,000-square-foot facility for our Christian Life Program to double our capacity from 50 to 100 men.
The new shelter will be located on City Union Mission’s existing campus between the Men’s Shelter and our administrative offices. It will include dignified sleeping rooms, more class and small-group meeting space and adequate facilities for learning and job training. Ample green space will be available for use by both CLP and Men’s Shelter guests.

  • Provide adequate, secure parking for City Union Mission donors, volunteers and staff.
Our volunteers are an integral part of our service to the community. In 2005, they provided 50,293 hours of service, allowing us to stretch our budget to better meet community needs. Donors drop off donations of important basic need items such as food, clothing and supplies. With expansion of our Men’s Shelter, we will face greater need for staff parking, which already is inadequate to accommodate all-staff meetings for our 135 staff.

  • Renovate and upgrade restrooms and classroom space at the Women and Families Shelter, including learning and technology support for our classrooms.

  • Upgrade water delivery and waste treatment systems at Camp CUMCITO, ensuring a safe, healthy living environment for our campers.
